A shark bit a 15-year-old from Atlantic Beach as he was surfing off the coast of New Smyrna Beach with friends Saturday afternoon.

A friend of the 15-year-old said they were surfing with a group when a shark bit his friend's achilles tendon on his left foot while he was surfing around 5:30 p.m.

Officials said it happened about 75 yards off shore near the New Smyrna Beach jetty.

The teen's friend said he didn't notice anything happened until his friend got to the shore and couldn't walk.

The 15-year-old, who is a student at Fletcher High School, told his friend the shark bit him twice and shook his foot.

Someone with their group ran to an ocean rescue vehicle for help once the teen got to shore.

First responders bandaged his ankle and said the bite may have been from a bull shark.

He and his family had taken a trip to Sebastian Inlet before stopping at New Smyrna Beach so he could surf.

The teen was taken to the hospital and may need surgery, according to his friend.

Officials said this was the county’s second shark bite this year.
