JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — For Black History Month, Action News Jax salutes Ray Alfred, Jacksonville’s first African American fire chief.
Then Mayor John Delaney recruited Chief Alfred from Washington D.C. in a national search. Alfred retired after 30 years serving and leading emergency operations in the nation’s capitol before taking the helm of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department from 1995 to 2003.
He continues to sit on city and state boards serving and consulting.
