Brunswick teacher allegedly posts on Facebook about a 'Limited Edition Section 8 Barbie'

One of the alleged posts by Lisa Sowerby featured a photo of a Barbie doll with a baby-bump and the caption “Limited Edition Section 8 Barbie.”

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Action News Jax is looking into alleged racist Facebook posts made by a local teacher.

The pictures were found on Glynn County teacher Lisa Sowerby’s online profile.

She’s listed as the lead pre-K teacher at FACES Prekindergarten Center in Brunswick.

We spoke to several outraged parents with children in Sowerby’s class.

One of the alleged posts featured a photo of a Barbie doll with a baby-bump and the caption “Limited Edition Section 8 Barbie.”

Angry parents tell us their children’s teacher posted this on her Facebook page.

“I think it sucks my son has to deal with a teacher that might not like him,” said one parent. “She’s definitely teaching at this school, I’ve seen her recently."

The parents we spoke with have kids in Sowerby’s class. They didn’t want to show their faces or use their names to protect their kids from retaliation.

Parents tell us Sowerby also posted a picture of a Barbie with two kids that look African-American.

The caption says “Now able to purchase with EBT.” There’s also the asterisk saying “Three baby daddies sold separately.”

“Very, very racist, also degrading white and black mothers,” the parent we spoke with said.

We knocked on Sowerby’s front door at her listed address in St. Simons Island, but nobody answered.

Sowerby also allegedly wrote on her Facebook page about these pictures in December, “If you worked where I do, you would totally find this hysterical.”

Brunswick city officials tell me the poverty rate near this pre-K center is between 14 to 29 percent.

We asked the Glynn County School System if Sowerby faces any disciplinary action. So far, the district has not responded to our questions.

A Glynn County schools spokesperson sent us this statement about Sowerby:

“We are aware of the situation at FACES. This is a personnel matter and we will have no further comment at this point.”
