PALATKA, Fla. — Deputies said the gun that a 4-year-old accidentally fired at his mother as she was driving Tuesday is legally owned and they are investigating how the child got a hold of it.
Putnam deputies said they have not been able to talk with 31-year-old Jamie Gilt due to injuries she sustained after her son got a hold of a .45 caliber gun and accidentally shot her through the driver seat of her truck.
Deputies said Gilt is still in the hospital and a decision about charges related to where the gun was stored will not come until after they speak with her.
Storing or leaving a loaded firearm in a manner that it is likely a child can gain access to it is a misdemeanor.
Putnam deputies found a truck and horse trailer in the middle of travel lanes on Highway 20 near Rowland Avenue just after 3 p.m.
When they approached the truck they found Gilt in the front seat with a bullet wound.
She was taken to UF Health in stable condition, according to deputies.
The 4-year-old is now with family members.
Deputies said the Department of Children and Family Services are also reviewing the case.
Putnam County Sheriff's Office said its primary concern at this time is to provide the necessary services and assistance to the toddler and his family.
