Charlotte County, Fla. deputy shot to death during traffic stop

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — A Charlotte County deputy was shot and killed during a traffic stop Sunday. The sheriff said Cpl. Elio Diaz stopped a white pickup truck. The driver grabbed a rifle and shot him.

Diaz was taken to the hospital where he died.

“He was a good family man,” Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said during a news conference. “He loved his children and he was a really great cop.”

After a manhunt, the shooter, Andrew Mostyn Jr., was located by deputies. When deputies approached him, Prummell said, Mostyn again reached for his rifle, but deputies shot him. Mostyn was taken to the hospital where he died.
