A young girl has died following an incident at the Oak Tree Apartments on Lake Shore Boulevard, according to a statement released by the Florida Department of Children and Families on Saturday.
Neighbors said police first responded to their complex Wednesday morning and spent two straight days at the site.
On Friday, neighbors said two Jacksonville Sheriff's Office crime scene vans showed up to collect evidence from one of the units.
Interim Secretary of DCF Rebecca Kapusta said, "I am absolutely horrified and disgusted at the abuse this child endured in her short life. That anyone would hurt an innocent child is shameful, and DCF will work closely with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to hold anyone responsible for her abuse fully accountable under the law.
"There are not sufficient words to describe the pain those who loved her are feeling right now, but the department will continue to ensure her sibling is in a safe home and that she receives the highest quality care as she recovers from this loss."
DCF said that a comprehensive analysis of the family and their interactions with the child welfare system will be completed.
A woman, who didn't want to be identified, said JSO asked her questions about the children who live two doors down from her and if she had heard any abuse.
Action News Jax confirmed with sources a child was badly beaten and showed signs of abuse. Sources said the child was on life support at that time.
Sources also gave Action News Jax the names of two individuals who might be involved. We are not naming them at this time, but they do appear in the Duval County jail log on child neglect and abuse charges.
We have requested copies of their mug shots and arrest reports.
