Clay County, Fla. — A Clay County mom took action and now kids no longer have to cross a busy highway to get on their school bus.

This year has already been a stressful but now that school’s started in Clay County, Destinee Moore said her children’s bus stop was an added source of stress.

“To me, it just doesn’t seem safe for any children to have to cross 17 at all to get on the bus,” said Moore.

Highway 17 in Clay County is a major thoroughfare.

Video shot by Moore shows her 8- and 11-year-olds crossing part of the highway to get on the bus.

“Right after their bus left, I actually almost saw a wreck,” said Moore.

Her 15-year-old, Nicholas, also rides the bus but must catch it even earlier when it’s still dark out.

“I didn’t like the idea that we had to cross the whole highway to get on,” he said.

After she reached out to the district, they sent someone out to speak with her and take a look at the issue.

Thanks to her speaking up, the school district has instructed the driver to go into the Black Creek Village neighborhood to pick up and drop off kids.

“I want the kids to be safe and we need to do what it takes to keep them safe,” said Moore.

Moore hopes that her effort inspires others to speak up, if they see something that should be fixed, especially if it has to do with the safety of children.
