MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — Tonight—a Clay County mother says she wants answers in the death of her 11-year-old son. His name is Rylan Wise.
Court documents say he died from a methadone overdose at his father’s home in January.
Action News Jax Courtney Cole spoke to his mother, Maddie Wise, who wants to know why no one has been held responsible for his death.
“I replay the day in my head, over and over again.”
January 12th, 2021.
It’s the day Maddie Wise says she lost her first born son, Rylan Wise.
According to the Clay County Investigator’s Report, the sheriff’s office responded to two calls from Rylan’s Father’s home on Louie Carter Road in Maxville on the morning of January 12th.
Maddie and Rylan’s father have split custody of Rylan.
Part of the Investigator’s Report was removed for legal reasons, but what Cole was able to read, said when the sheriff’s office arrived at the home, 11-year-old Wise was already dead.
Rylan’s mom said his father called to let her know what happened.
“He just said, it’s Rylan, he’s dead, and hung up the phone,” Maddie told Action News Jax Courtney Cole.
In the Medical Examiner’s Report, the cause of death is listed as: “drug intoxication by ingestion of methadone.”
Methadone is a drug used to treat opioid addiction and pain.
The manner of death listed in the report: “suicide, took drug overdose.”
Maddie said it was two days before Rylan’s father knew he died.
“It doesn’t make any sense to me,” Maddie said.
Maddie said she had concerns for her son’s safety before all of this happened.
Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook has also penned a letter, recommending the other children not be placed with him as well.
Action News Jax Courtney Cole called Rylan’s father directly and left a message.
She also called and e-mailed his attorney to allow him to share his side of the story, but she has not received a response.
“I know he wants justice for his name,” said Maddie.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office told Action News Jax the investigation is not closed until the investigative report is completed.
They’re expecting to be done with it by the end of the week.
