A toddler was taken to the hospital after a dog bit her in the face in St. Augustine on Saturday.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says 22-month-old Kaylee Rainey was riding on the pit bull’s back Saturday morning when she swatted it twice in the face.
Kaylee had several large lacerations on her face after the dog bit her.
Her mother, Dana Burkett, tells Action News Jax that the dog belongs to Kaylee’s stepfather.
“She had facial surgery,” Burkett said. “Her face is pretty mangled.”
No charges have been filed but in October 2016, Jacksonville officers arrested Burkett for child neglect.
Police said Burkett was found unconscious in a car with two children inside.
Police believe she suffered a drug overdose. They gave her Narcan to revive her, according to a police report.
The Florida Department of Children and Families sent Action News Jax the following statement:
“We are concerned about this incident, and we are gathering additional information about what happened. These children are currently under the active supervision of the court system, with regular visits by caseworkers. The purpose of these visits is to ensure that the children are safe and that the parents are making appropriate decisions regarding their children.”
