Jacksonville city leaders are looking at ways to bump speed limits down in neighborhood streets from 30 mph to 20 mph.

This comes on the heels of a Smart Growth American Study, which revealed Jacksonville is the 6th most dangerous city in the country for pedestrians.

Neighbors living on Inwood Terrace in San Marco are fed up with one thing.

“Speeders,” said neighbor Jennie Softas. “Because we are a cut-through [street], [the drivers] are all up and down the street.”

Along Inwood Terrace, the posted speed limit is 30 mph. But in front of every home you’re going to find “20 is Plenty” signs. Homeowners want everyone to slow down. They also say the fact that there are no speed bumps there doesn’t help.

The next street over, Felch Avenue, has implemented those changes.

“It helped a little bit,” said neighbor Victor Rukab. “We have all the little kids in the neighborhood and a lot of older people that can’t move that fast.”

“This ‘20 is Plenty’ has kinda caught on,” said Jacksonville City Councilmember Matt Carlucci, who represents At-Large Group 4. He is now working on expanding this into other neighborhoods.

“We owe an effort to try and control and better manage our traffic,” he pointed out. Carlucci hosted a discussion with other councilmembers on Tuesday to find out where to start.

“We’ve asked the public works and sheriff’s office to find those streets where we can do a pilot program,” Carlucci said.

And afterwards, he said he’ll be looking at: “Action steps. You know, implementing.”

Neighbors say they remain hopeful.

“We’ve been pushing for this for years,” Softas said. “We’re looking forward to this movement.”
