Jacksonville police identify suspect in officer-involved shooting, release photo of gun they say he possessed

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE, 4/13/2020: The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect in an officer-involved shooting that took place in Arlington on Saturday night.

Kyon Wilkes, 24, has been charged with fleeing or eluding an officer in a patrol vehicle, carrying a concealed firearm, resisting an officer without violence and driving while license suspended, cancelled or revoked.

JSO also released a photo the gun they say Wilkes possessed.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is on the scene of the second officer-involved shooting Saturday, this time in Arlington. The shooting took place at Playa Way and Caliente Drive, near several apartment complexes.

JSO said police pulled a man over for speeding near University Boulevard and Playa Way and the man got out of the car and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers chased after the man and one shouted, “He’s got a gun!” during the pursuit. It’s not clear whether the suspect pulled out the gun during the chase.

Officer J.R. Matthew shot the suspect, who remains in the hospital in stable condition.

A gun was recovered from the scene afterwards.

JSO tweeted that no officers were hurt in the shooting and the suspect was taken to a local hospital.
