Ribault High and Middle, Sallye B. Mathis Elementary were locked down due to ‘sounds of gunfire’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Three Duval County Public Schools were on lockdown due to reports of gunfire in the area, according to a message sent to families of students at the schools.

Ribault High School, Ribault Middle School, and Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School were on lockdown, according to a DCPS message sent to families.

The lockdown at the schools has since been lifted, DCPS said.

Here is the initial message that was sent to families:

“Good Afternoon, this is Duval County Public Schools.

“This message is for families of students at Ribault High School, Ribault Middle School, and Sallye B. Mathis Elementary.

“First, we want you to know that all students and staff are safe. Again, all students and staff are safe. However, these schools are on a lockdown as a precaution due to reports of the sounds of gunfire in the neighborhood. Repeating, these schools are on lockdown due to reports of the sounds of gunfire in the neighborhood. We remind you that while a school is on lockdown, no one is allowed to enter or leave the campus.  We will follow up with you once the situation is clear. Thank you and stand by for more information.”

Here is a follow-up message that was sent to Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School families:

“Good Afternoon Sallye B. Mathis Elementary families,

“This is Duval County Public Schools calling with a good news update.

The lockdown has been lifted, and the school is dismissing as normal.

“Again, police have advised that the school could safely lift its lockdown and dismiss as normal.

“Thank you for your patience as we take these security precautions to keep our children and staff safe!”
