Police said the driver ran off -- leaving the Nissan involved at the scene.
Action News Jax Law and Safety expert Dale Carson said the investigation will begin with finding the driver of the white Nissan Altima. He argued it could be difficult to prove who exactly was driving the car at the time, but said the airbags could have evidence of DNA from the crash.
“If it's a newer car and has airbags, it is a sealed device, so any DNA that’s discovered on the airbag indicates that you were behind the wheel when it went off,” Carson said.
A description of the injuries have not been released at this time. Carson said the number of people hurt combined with the severity of their injuries could change the level of charges for the suspect.
“If you leave the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury or death you’re going to get the same penalty as if you were drinking when the accident occurred,” Carson said.
According to Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, one person had to be extricated from the SUV.
