Police have not identified any suspects in the shooting death of Glen McNeil Jr.

He was shot near SeaWalk Pavilion at approximately 1 a.m. Wednesday, while many people were still celebrating the Fourth of July.

McNeil's mother said she got a call about the shooting around 2 a.m.

“His friend -- when he called me -- (he) told me that he was shot, but he assured me he was okay,” Davis said. “We weren’t prepared. We weren’t braced for what we heard."

McNeil died at the hospital.

"The entire time I was in route to the hospital, I just couldn’t imagine that I wouldn’t be seeing him again," Davis said. "I was more less thinking, 'How am I going to care for him with his injured arm?' Not that he had expired."

McNeil’s brother said they are still struggling to deal with what happened.

“I’m heartbroken right now. This is a tough pill to swallow,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell says he believes that truth is a video that was posted on Facebook.

“I saw some videos of an altercation, like somebody was really choking my brother out," Mitchell said. "My brother has asthma, so that really hurts me just to see him like that."

He said there were a lot of people standing around during the video, and he's not sure what happened after.

"There were a lot of people standing around, recording. Like making fun of him. That’s what making me so mad," Mitchell said. "I’m hearing a lot of different things, so I’m just waiting for the truth."

Police said another person had an injury to the hand after the shooting but is expected to be OK.

Action News Jax spoke to Jacksonville Beach Mayor Charlie Latham who tells us he's angry about this double shooting and is looking to change the main cause of these issues.

“We can’t legislate behavior, but we can be as preventative as possible," Latham said. "We’ve got some good actors and bad actors downtown and that includes bars and patrons.”

Latham says that means considering more security and addressing what he considers the main problem alcohol, so the city will be reaching out to the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agency for suggestions on addressing the issue.

McNeil's mom said she just wants whoever killed her son to come forward.

"I’m not motivated by hatred or revenge, but there’s consequences to your actions," she said. "I just want that person to come forward and do the right thing."
