A 58-year-old man who fell to his death at a port terminal in Fernandina Beach was concerned about lack of safety procedures at his job, a family member says.
Fernandina Beach native Timothy Dubberly was inside a crane making repairs Friday when the cab separated and fell 100 feet to the ground, police said.
Dubberly, a father and grandfather, worked for Kinder Morgan for more than 25 years, his cousin Jimmy Dubberly told Action News Jax.
Jimmy Dubberly said his cousin expressed concerned about safety procedures at the port, and the family is hurt by the company’s lack of support shown after his death.
“When he went to work, he said he feared he’d never come home," Jimmy Dubberly said. "And it happened.”
He said the family can’t plan a funeral because nobody is sharing when the body will be released.
“Nobody has notified the family where the body is,” Jimmy Dubberly said.
A spokesperson for Kinder Morgan said the company is conducting an investigation along with OSHA into what led to the fall.
According to OSHA’s website, the Nassau County facility was fined $3,400 for a safety violation in 2011 and its Tampa facility was fined approximately $11,000 for a health violation in 2013.
“It makes me angry,” Jimmy Dubberly said. "As tragic as this event was it should of never of happened.”
