The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a serious bodily injury crash at Normandy Blvd and Chaffee Road.
FHP said three vehicles were involved in the head-on collision and four occupants were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
One of those patients is a small child, according to FHP.
FHP says the roadway is still blocked and traffic is being detoured. FHP is encouraging drivers to seek an alternate route.
Witnesses tell Action News Jax reporter Kevin Clark, who is on the scene, that a baby in one of the vehicles ended up on the floorboard.
“I ran over there. There was two bodies in the street, a young female and young male and of course I’m screaming. I’m going, 'Oh my God'. A good Samaritan yelled from the background and said, there’s a baby in the truck. I saw that the baby was on the floorboard. She was crunched up like a little envelope, her legs were up. Her little arm was wrapped around the steering wheel," a witness on the scene said.
“I could smell the fumes coming out into the vehicle, and I thought, if I can’t breathe this, this baby only has like a couple of minutes in here. He literally came over and took one strong tug… boom. I could feel that she absolutely she had a heartbeat. At the moment you’re just realizing how fragile life is,” the witness said.
"Midd-air is when he hit that car, and it flipped, and I believe that’s when the two people got ejected. He launched over that median right here, and that’s when he connected with that car that was going east. I just saw the truck, I mean, flying through the air," the witness said.
