FORSYTH, Ga. — U.S. Marshals arrested Robert Stackowitz Monday – nearly 48 years after he escaped from a Carroll County prison.
Stackowitz escaped from the Carroll County Correctional Institution on Aug. 22, 1968 after he was sentenced to 17 years for robbery by force.
The Georgia Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension unit reopened this cold case five months ago, and began a comprehensive investigation. Officials uncovered a possible alias identity for Stackowitz, which was Robert Gordon.
That led the marshals to his location in Connecticut.
The marshals arrested Stackowitz without incident.
Stackowitz is currently being held in a Connecticut jail facility awaiting extradition to Georgia.
