BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the Glynn County Health Department are investigating a spill into a storm water drainage ditch along Chris Road and Highway 99 after fish began to wash up dead in the area.

According to a press release, authorities believe the pollution is the result of a busted well water pipe. Clean up efforts are underway to remove water mixed with traces from the impacted property and drainage ditch, which is connected to Sunbelt Forest Products’ ditch one quarter mile upstream.
Residents are told to remain away from the water until cleanup is complete. Public and private groundwater wells, however, are not expected to be affected by the spillage.
The investigation began into this area after homeowners began noticing fish floating ashore dead. The canal near the drainage ditch is a popular location for fishing, according to residents. The Glynn Environmental Coalition, a local group of environmentalists, requested the water testing from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division after numerous complaints.
