GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation held a news conference Friday morning on what would have been Ahmaud Arbery’s 26th birthday.
Arbery was shot and killed after an encounter on Feb. 23 in the Satilla Shores neighborhood in Glynn County. Gregory McMichael and his son Travis pursued Arbery who was jogging, in the middle of day, because they believed he was the suspect in recent break-ins, according to the initial Glynn County police report.
For over two months, no arrests were made until the GBI was requested to review the case Tuesday, after a graphic video showing the young man’s death was posted online, getting national attention. The McMichaels were arrested Thursday and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault.
In the news conference Friday, the GBI said they got involved late Tuesday evening after being requested and “hit the ground running pretty hard” on Wednesday morning, said Vic Reynolds, Director of the GBI.

Within 36 hours, GBI said they were able to obtain an arrest warrant. When asked if there will be any more arrests, Reynolds stated the case remains an active and open investigation as they continue to look at all the evidence. The video is not the only evidence in the case, according to the GBI, but it is a very important piece.
Investigators said they will look into everyone involved in the case, including the person who filmed the video, William Bryan. At this time, he has not been charged with a crime.
When asked if the district attorney should be fired, the GBI did not want to comment on that matter. The GBI also noted there is no hate crime law in Georgia.

Reynolds began the news conference sending his condolences to Arbery’s family and thanked the Glynn County residents for their patience with the investigation. “Deepest condolences to Arbery family, want to thank them. They were gracious in extending patience to us. I want to thank residents of Glynn County for their patience, as emotions have run high.”
