The man wanted for murdering a local baseball player has been booked into a Clay County Jail.

Ozell McNabb Jr., 22, turned himself in two days after the shooting that killed a Clay County teen in Green Cove Springs.

McNabb Jr. met St. Johns County deputies on State Road 13 North, where officials confirmed his identity and arrested him. Since then, he’s been transported to Clay County Jail. McNabb Jr. requested to speak with an attorney, so no questioning has taken place.

Neighbors who live near the home where shots rang out Sunday morning knew something was wrong.

“I just heard three gun shots because I thought they were like firecrackers. It was like 'pop, pop, pop,'” said neighbor, Mark Denman.

Detectives do believe McNabb Jr. was able to leave Clay County at some point on Monday. McNabb will have his first court appearance Wednesday in Clay County.

“I’m relieved that he’s in custody now. Now, I can go to sleep at night knowing that there is one less thing to be concerned about,” said neighbor Sheryl Dyal.

Deputies, K9 units from several agencies, including US Marshal and a police helicopter searched for McNabb Jr after an 18-year-old was killed and another man was injured during an armed robbery in Green Cove Springs.

McNabb is one of four people accused in the death of Kolton Shearer, 18. Taurean Johnson, 28, Jordan Tyler Coleman, 20, and Alexandra Schreffler, 21, are in custody for murder and robbery.

Dyal can’t believe Shearer lost his life on her street.

“It hurts my heart. My heart goes out to them. In fact, in my morning prayers, I did pray for the Shearer family,” Dyal said.

Clay County detectives said three victims came to a home on State Road 16 and Randall Road, where Coleman and Schreffler lived.

They may have been there to buy drugs, according to deputies.

Crime scene tape surrounded the house as investigators put together the pieces of what led up to the overnight shooting.

Action News Jax was there as detectives collected evidence, took pictures and discussed the logistics from this crime scene.

Clay County deputies told us several shots were fired as the victims tried to escape. They believe this is an attempted robbery that’s drug related. Neighbors tell us the people at the house likely sell drugs.

“I hear a lot of traffic late at night, especially on the weekends,” Dyal said.

Investigators said the three victims escaped in a black truck and drove less than a half of a mile away to a Kangaroo Express gas station to ask for help.

That’s where a clerk called 911. Deputies found Shearer dead near the gas pump as a result of his wounds, and another man who was shot in the leg.

The young, injured adult was taken to Orange Park Medical Center, and as of Tuesday night, he was still there recovering from his injuries.

This country community is where Dyal grew up knowing everybody. Now, she fears her hometown is turning down a dark path.

“I never had to deal with this when I was a young girl. Protect your family at all cost and pray. I pray,” Dyal said.

Dyal told Action News Jax she’s planning on starting a neighborhood watch group to help lessen the crime on her street.
