Police: 6-year-old girl dies after shooting at North Jacksonville home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Oct. 12 Update: According to the Department of Children and Families (DCF), the 6-year-old girl was playing with her mother’s gun at a home in Lake Forest area, when she accidentally shot herself in the head. The child’s father identified her to Action News Jax as Nay’loni Fairley.

A child is dead following a shooting at a home on Linda Drive Thursday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Officers responded to the home near Lem Turner Road after receiving a call for help just before 7 a.m. and found the 6-year-old girl, who had been shot in the head, inside.

JSO said she was taken to a hospital where she later died of her injuries.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the shooting as an undetermined death and do not have anyone in custody at this time.

JSO said the child’s mother and two other kids were home at the time of the shooting.

Police said the gun belonged to a parent of the young girl.

Our records show at least 25 other children have been shot in Jacksonville this year. Seven of them, including the girl shot on Thursday, were deadly.
