JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An executive order signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday suspended all local mask mandates in the state. But that doesn’t mean Floridians can toss their masks.
There are still several places that can require people to wear face coverings.

Fernandina Beach Mayor Mike Lednovich called the governor’s decision a “steamrolling over local government.” The Nassau County city was the only local municipality with a mask mandate still in place. Lednovich said the following in a statement:
“The governor’s action brings to the forefront the issue of “home rule” — the power of local municipalities to determine what action best serve its citizens.
“The governor has once again usurped the authority of the City Commission to determine what decisions are best for our local community.
“This is nothing more than the state steamrolling over local government.”

The Florida Department of Education issued the following guidance to school districts:
“Questions have arisen over the impacts of the Executive Orders EO-21-101, which is not effective until July 1, 2021, and EO-21-102, which is effective immediately.
“To clarify, EO-21-102 only impacts city and county governments, and does NOT impact school districts and individual schools.
“Moreover, EO-21-101 and EO-21-102 only impacts restrictive COVID-19 orders/ordinances that are adopted through emergency enactment.
“Neither EO-21-101 nor EO-21-102 impact any school district’s policies for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.”
