I-95 Nassau County crash: At least 1 dead, more than 20 vehicles involved

7:06 a.m. Sept. 5 --

A 22-vehicle crash on I-95 southbound has killed one person and hurt 13 others in Nassau County near mile marker 374.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a semi-driver slammed into a back-up already on the road after a separate two-car crash in the south-bound lanes near Yulee, causing a larger scene.

Troopers say driver of that semi is cooperating with them and it does not appear that drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crashes, but they are not ruling out other possibilities like distracted driving.

FHP said the person who died hasn’t been identified yet.

13 others were injured.

“At this time we don’t think alcohol or controlled substance was a factor, but we want to make sure we cover all of our bases whether driver distraction of fatigue,” said Sgt. Dylan Bryan.

FHP was expecting to re-open the southbound lanes around 6 a.m. Tuesday, but they didn't open until just after 7 a.m.

Traffic is still backed up and troopers recommend using U.S. 17 as an alternate route.
