Illegal snipe signs spotted throughout Jacksonville

Illegally posted snipe signs are popping up throughout the city of Jacksonville.

Snipe signs that offer advertisements and services are banned from public property, but Action News Jax found many of them posted on the Southside and the Northside.

“I see them all over the place,” Jacksonville resident Vanessa Burton said.

Some signs offer to buy houses, sell products and provide services for a good price.

The city fines violators up to $500 for repeat offenders, but holding people responsible isn’t easy.

Action News Jax obtained an email sent to city leaders about concerns over snipe signs.

Bryan Mosier, the acting chief of the city’s Municipal Code Compliance Division, said city officials tried to call a number on one of the signs numerous times over the last couple of months, but they have been unable to reach anyone.

“MCCD (continues) to try to make contact with the violator and issue citations for this and the other snipe signs,” Mosier wrote.

Some people said that leaves the city with little power to enforce the law.

“They need to try to crack down on it,” Kaitlyn Blume said. “It definitely clutters up the road and it could be distracting to some people.”

Burton said that while she sees the signs everywhere, she does not feel that catching the people behind the listed phone numbers on the signs is a major priority.

“They need to save their resources for all the crime that goes on in this city,” Burton said.
