‘It’s kind of appalling:’ LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus weighs in on Acosta Bridge light situation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Governor’s office confirmed the rainbow light display for PRIDE month on the Acosta Bridge will return Wednesday night.

This comes after the scheme was changed from the pro-LGBTQ+ colors to blue on Tuesday, creating controversy.

Action News Jax broke the news Tuesday night when the Florida Department of Transportation told Jacksonville Transportation Authority it was in violation of its permit for the color display.

Regardless of the switch back — many in the LGBTQ+ community believe the initial change was not a good call, especially during PRIDE month.

“It’s kind of appalling that it’s gone from something that’s a celebration to now a controversy,” Stephen Gaskill said. He serves as President of the LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus.

In response to the controversial incident, people from the Jacksonville area created a Facebook event, “Walk the Acosta with Pride.”

The plan is to walk the bridge holding rainbow flags, this Saturday.

The Governor’s office said it has nothing to do with the initial decision to change the color scheme, adding it will be changed back Wednesday evening. A spokesperson referred Action News Jax to FDOT for further updates.

Gaskill said the fact that it happened was not acceptable. He adds that right now, people need to be allies for the LGBTQ+ community.

“We’re still fighting for equality in Florida and even across the country,” Gaskill said. “That’s really what all these issues are about. That’s why we should be shining a light on what’s happening.”
