At least 800 jobs are one step closer to coming to Jacksonville.

On Tuesday evening, city leaders approved an incentive package for the solar company behind "Project Volt."

The agreement approved by the city council binds the city and state to an initial $53 million in economic incentives.

The city's share is capped at $24.2 million to be collected between a qualified targeted industry tax refund that pays out per job and a recaptured enhanced value grant that represents the increase in property taxes from the company's operation.

"Project Volt" will bring the national headquarters of a solar panel manufacturing company to Jacksonville.

That company would lease two existing warehouses, one at the Cecil Commerce Center on New World Avenue and the other on Faye Road.

Councilmembers say Jacksonville is competing with another city for the jobs, and the solar company should make its decision in the next few weeks.

"We feel comfortable that our package will be well-received," said Councilman Aaron Bowman. "But until they make the announcement, we're still in the fight."
