Jacksonville family raises money to bail 20-year-old son with autism out of jail

Justin Hudson was bailed out of jail Wednesday at approximately 9:45 p.m. Family thanked everyone for their donations and support and said an attorney has volunteered to represent Hudson.

Original story: A Jacksonville family is raising money to bail their son who has autism out of jail.

Justin Hudson, 20, was arrested for felony battery on a law enforcement officer.

Family said Hudson -- who has the mental capacity of a 5 to 7 year old -- crawled out of a window at his Jacksonville home early July 3 to explore.

He was detained and officers called Hudson's father to pick him up.

He got upset when officers told him he was trespassing, pushed his dad and spit in an officer's face, according to a police report.

He was arrested and taken to the Duval County Jail, where he is still in custody.

Hudson was born with cerebral palsy, suffers from autism and requires daily supervision, family said on a crowd funding website.

He attends a school for the exceptionally disabled and needs help with basic functions including bathing, eating and walking, the fundraising page said.

His family said he is at extreme risk of physical, sexual and mental harm in jail. They said he is not getting the protection or medical care he needs from professionals trained to deal with someone who has autism and cerebral palsy.

"Yes, his actions were wrong, but it's a part of his disability," family said on the page. "He is developmentally at the age of a 5 year old child ... if someone cusses around him he says "ohhhh bad word" and yet he is expected to fend for himself in the adult general population of a jail for weeks until a judge can see him and assess him? That's unacceptable."

The family does not have money for Hudson's bond, so they are raising funds on a You Caring page.

"Justin has now been in Duval County adult jail for over 48 hours. He is not receiving the specialized care and daily routines necessary for his severe disabilities," family said. "Please help us raise the $1,200 needed to bail Justin out so he can be safe, with the correct professionals, while we try to handle the legal logistics of all of this."
