When they arrived at the apartment complex, they found Henry Martinez, 28, in front of the doorway to his residence with several gunshot wounds.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department pronounced Martinez dead at the scene.

JSO said Martinez was shot several times.

Martinez's girlfriend was inside the apartment when he was shot, JSO said.

Neighbors told Action News Jax that the two had a baby.

“He was a very nice person, caring  love his wife and baby and he checked on me to make sure I was okay, daily," Norma Sarver said.

“Our sons used to be playing around together. I see his son everyday, I’d see him everyday. It’s sad," said friend and neighbor Cory Hayes.

JSO said the investigation is active and they are searching for the gunman.
