Jacksonville officer who shot unarmed man after chase makes statement to police

The Jacksonville Sheriff's officer involved in a shooting that left a man dead in Springfield in late May has given his statement to police.

Officer Tyler Landreville fired his gun five times at Vernell Bing Jr., striking him once in the head. Bing led officers on a four-mile chase in a stolen red Camaro. Police say Bing was unarmed. No gun was found on Bing or in the car he was driving.

The content of Landreville's statement has not yet been released. Several civil rights groups have called for an outside entity to investigate the shooting. Sheriff Mike Williams said when all information concerning the investigation into the shooting shooting can be made public, it will.

JSO said it will conduct an internal investigation into the shooting and the State Attorney's Office will conduct its own concurrent investigation. Councilman Reggie Gaffney is calling for a federal independent investigation into this shooting, and JSO as a whole.
