JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a woman is being charged with aggravated child abuse charges after they say she threw a baby into his Pack and Play while babysitting him.

Sgt. Jay Farhat said around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, JSO responded to the 2000 block of Davis Road in reference to a 5-month-old boy that was not breathing.

The child was taken to UF Health Jacksonville in life-threatening condition. Doctors determined the child had internal injuries consistent with some type of trauma.

The child was being taken care of by a babysitter, 65-year-old Barbara Kendrick. Farhat said that during the interview, Kendrick admitted to throwing the baby in his Pack and Play after the baby had been fussy due to fever and teething.

Farhat said the parents were working at the time of the incident and brought the baby to Kendrick's house, as they had been doing for about a month to two months. The 5-month-old child was the only child at the house.

Farhat said Kendrick has no previous record that JSO is aware of. Kendrick and the baby are related by marriage, Farhat said.

Kendrick is being booked into the Duval County Jail. Farhat said the baby has been taken to Wolfson Children's Hospital and said the doctors say the child's prognosis is not good.

"Any time you have a small child, it's heartbreaking, and we take these cases to heart," Farhat said.
