JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a man was shot in the head near George Washington Carver Elementary School on Monday evening.
Police said the incident does not involve any students or staff.
JSO said the school was placed on lockdown while a precautionary search was conducted, but the lockdown was lifted and students were released to their parents around 7 p.m.
The man shot along with some other people were walking past the school when the shooting started. According to police, a silver four-door Ford Fusion pulled up to the people and began shooting.
The victims ran to get away from the shooting when the man was struck in the head, police said.
Bullets also hit a car on the school campus and a door on the school.
The man’s head wound in not life-threatening, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The elementary school was locked down for around 45 minutes to an hour, police said.
One father was on his way to pick up his 5-year-old son from the after school program, when he received a call about a shooting on campus. He was told he was not allowed to get his son right away.
“They say you couldn’t get them.” He said. “They said probably a couple hours because it’s on code red.“
He and several other parents still rushed to the school, worried for their child’s safety.
“It could have been one of the kids.” He said. “It’s too much killing going on, and too many young people dying and that’s a fact.”
The Sheriff’s Office said it doesn’t have a motive for the shooting at this time.
