Jacksonville's main library shut down due to heavy storms in area

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — There were several areas damaged after the strong storms rolled through Tuesday afternoon.

The main library downtown suffered damage, a driver's his car stopped working after he drove it high water and a fire, likely caused by a lighting strike, broke out at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. .

A light pole toppled on I-10 due to storm damage, causing slight traffic delays.

Tuesday was the first day the Jacksonville area has had rainfall in the past 15 days. Downtown Jacksonville received 2 to 3 inches of rainfall that was much needed, but it caused some problems for people in the area.

Gregory Parker was driving in the rain and tried to ride through a puddle of water that was deeper than he thought.

“The water started coming up. The water is above my seat. That’s why I eventually got out of my car,” Parker said.

His car stopped working and he was forced to walk home.

“Oh, yeah, it was really fast. The car just died. It was nothing else I could do,” Parker said.

Inside the main library downtown, there was also flooding.

It happened after a rain pipe burst.

It burst inside the main library, causing it to flood.

At NAS Jax, lightning likely started a fire at a hangar that was undergoing renovations.

No one was injured and the hangar was empty so no planes or helicopters burned.

Jacksonville International Airport, where records are kept, didn’t see any rain Tuesday.

The next threat for rain and storms is not until the weekend.
