Jacksonville woman charged with manslaughter in 2-year-old son’s death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville police said Friday a mother is responsible for her 2-year-old son’s March 2024 death. Melissa Rae Harper, 43, brought the child to the hospital. He was unresponsive and told medical staff in the emergency room she found him that way.

Shortly after arriving at the emergency room, the child died, police said. The Medical Examiner’s autopsy revealed the toddler died from a Combined Drug Intoxication of Fentanyl and Xylazine, JSO stated in a news release Friday.

Harper remained in Duval County jail Friday charged with Aggravated Manslaugher of a Child.
