1 teen dead, 4 hurt in shooting on Jacksonville’s Northside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE 5:21 p.m.: One teen between 17 and 18 years old was killed in a shooting in the 13000 block of Lanier Road, police say, and four others were injured.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office first responded around 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday to calls of shots fired in the area. An investigation determined that six people were shot at while they were inside a vehicle at Duval Station Road and Starratt Road.

After the shooting, police believe the victims, four boys and two girls between the ages of 17 and 18, drove to Lanier Road to escape.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department pronounced one of the victims deceased and transported four other victims to the hospital. The one victim who remained is being interviewed by police.

The shooting happened near Louis S. Sheffield Elementary and First Coast High School.

Action News Jax reached out to Duval County Public Schools, who confirmed that a loaded firearm was confiscated at First Coast High School Tuesday and a student has been taken into custody. It is unclear if this incident and the shooting are related at this time.

First Coast High School will have increased security Wednesday due to the shooting and sent parents the following message:

“Good Afternoon First Coast High School families,

This is Principal Fluent with a follow-up to my earlier phone call this afternoon. We are aware of tragic acts of violence taking place in our surrounding area. While these events are not taking place on our campus, we will have enhanced security measures for the near future as a precaution. Again, we will be taking enhanced security measures for the near future in light of the acts of violence taking place in our area. Thank you for your understanding and partnership. We look forward to seeing your child at school tomorrow.”

Two Action News Jax reporters are at the scene of a fatal shooting in Oceanway where at least one person is reported dead and four others are hurt.

A spokesperson with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said first responders arrived at the “large scene” and transported four people to the hospital with injuries. They say another person had already succumbed to their injuries when they arrived.

It is unclear if this incident is related to the shooting.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said it will hold a live news conference at 5:15.
