JSO: 1 dead, 1 critically injured after crashing car into Redemption Church

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is reporting that one person is dead and one is critically injured after a car crashed into the front of Redemption Church Tuesday morning.

According to detectives, at around 12:07 a.m., a Toyota sedan was traveling westbound on San Juan Avenue. The road ends at the intersection with Lane Avenue South. For unknown reasons, the driver failed to turn onto Lane Avenue South and continued straight into the church parking lot before hitting the concrete pillar supporting the metal overhang.

The crash caused the car to overturn and eject the female passenger. She was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition. JSO said that neither person was wearing a seatbelt.

Detectives are looking into speed and impairment as possible contributors to the crash. No roadways were closed as a result of the investigation.

This marks the 169th traffic death in Duval County this year.
