JSO: 17-year-old accused of fatally shooting JSO K-9

Jacksonville officers say a 17-year-old admitted to shooting a JSO K-9 after an armed kidnapping Sunday.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said an armed carjacking and kidnapping happened at 7-Eleven on Lem Turner Road around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Detectives said OnStar tracked the car, and a K-9 officer attempted to stop it at I-295 and I-10.

After a brief pursuit, OnStar disabled the car and officers say Jhamel Paskel fled into a wooded area.

K-9 Fang was released in pursuit of him.

JSO says when Fang caught Paskel, he shot Fang with a 9 millimeter handgun.

The teen continued running but was arrested by officers, who had established a perimeter around the area.

JSO said Paskel was arrested and confessed to shooting Fang. Officers said the gun was recovered from the scene.

Paskel is charged with two counts of armed kidnapping, armed robbery and killing a police K-9, JSO said.

According to JSO, Fang played a vital roll keeping everyone safe at special events and football games and captured some of the most dangerous criminals in our city.

He was a 3-year-old German Shepherd who served as a bomb detector and patrol dog.

JSO said Fang's partner is very upset, as officers and their K-9 partners have a very close relationship.
