Only Action News Jax can show you what the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says are high-crime areas all over the city.
We’re learning more about the plan to protect people in those neighborhoods with better lighting.
Driving through neighborhoods in Jacksonville, you'll probably see some areas are not as well-lit as others, which can be a breeding ground for crime.
But now, the data in the new JSO maps for each of the city's six police zones may change that. From the Southside, the Eastside, Westside and Northside, the red areas on the maps denote the high crime areas and the black outline around them denote the neighborhoods impacted by those high crime areas.
Tasha works in a high-crime area in Arlington, the same area where a local mother was killed last month.
“Maybe we need to get together, and start something for our community,” Tasha said.
We obtained the maps through a public records request. They were given to GE last month as city leaders work with them to install 6,000 LED street lights across the city, starting in the high crime areas.
JSO said those areas could benefit from the new lighting.
Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson said it will create better visibility.
“If it's lit up better, it'll allow witnesses to see better if they witness a crime,” Jefferson said.
But Jefferson said even though there are specific areas targeted, it doesn't mean other areas are immune from crime.
“Even though we see the areas on the map, that doesn't mean anyone is exempt. It could happen anytime,” Jefferson said.
The lights will be installed from now until May.
