JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said it’s important for people to understand the process when it comes to incidents like the deadly police-involved shooting over the weekend.
Vernell Bing Jr. died after being injured in a police-involved shooting. His family took him off life support Monday night.
"We are always going to have incidents we have to deal with,” Williams said when asked how to rebuild the people’s trust. “So it's never going to be perfect. But I think we reach out and we talk and we have discussion, and we work through these issues is the important thing. And we are doing that."
Williams made his first public appearance Thursday at an event to honor their officers for excellent performance since the deadly shooting.
JSO investigates itself when it comes to police shootings, and some people believe that should change.
"I'm not a fan of citizen review boards. We've looked at different areas around the country that have that have those types of boards,” Williams said. “I think for us, what is important is to get the idea of what our process is out and have people understand our process."
Action News Jax New reporter Letisha Bereola learned that the officer involved in the shooting still hasn’t talked, and apparently doesn’t have to talk while internal affairs reviews the case.
