Lake City mayor's car crashes into lake after he put it in gear, got out, officials say

Lake City's mayor was treated for minor injuries after he put his car in gear and got out of it, which caused the car to jump a curb and and roll into a lake, officials said.

Mayor Stephen Witt, 64, may face charges after the alcohol-related crash at Lake DeSoto, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened at 11:45 p.m. on Jan. 27.

Witt put his 2011 GMC Terrain in gear, then for unknown reasons, got out of the car, according to FHP.

The car traveled 60 feet, jumped a curb then rolled down an embankment and into the lake.

It came to rest in about 4 feet of water, FHP said.

Witt had minor injuries and was treated at the hospital.

Charges are pending, according to the report.
