ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A man with a history of methamphetamine use claimed he was a hermaphrodite and kicked a deputy after people complained he was rummaging through their sheds in St. Johns County on Sunday, deputies said.
A St. Johns County Sheriff's Office deputy was searching for a suspicious person on Usina Road after neighbors said they saw someone walking through their yards and rummaging through their sheds.
Collin Abner, 35, ran out of the woods and in front of the deputy’s car. The deputy asked Abner what he was doing, and he said he’d been picking up trash.
When the deputy asked what his name was, Abner said "Victoria."
Abner told the deputy he is a hermaphrodite and was kind of sensitive about it when the deputy asked if he was sure Victoria was his name.
The deputy put Abner in the back of his patrol car while he determined if a crime was committed. Neighbors said they didn’t believe Abner took anything and didn’t want to complete statements.
When the deputy opened his car door, Abner pulled his feet back and kicked him, deputies said. The deputy struck him several times on the knee to get him back into the car, SJSO said.
After the deputy got control of Abner, he asked Abner again what his name was. Abner said it was Gregory Lee, and later told other deputies two different names.
Abner asked the deputy to shoot him several times on the way to the jail, SJSO said. Abner would not sit still and banged his head of the divider in the car, according to deputies.
When Abner got to the jail, staff said he needed to be cleared at the emergency room before he could be booked.
On the way to the hospital, Abner made a series of claims including that he placed a bomb at his parents’ house, was raped by his father and that a stranger had kidnapped him earlier that day and made him do drugs. He also ripped an antenna from the deputy’s back window, deputies said.
Deputies searched Abner’s parents’ home and found no explosive devices. His parents told deputies Abner had a history of methamphetamine use and his condition had worsened recently.
A St. Augustine Police officer at the hospital recognized Abner from a traffic stop the day before and identified him for deputies.
Abner was taken to jail and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, providing a false name and criminal mischief.
