Mandarin police shooting: Man killed after raising knife at officers, JSO says

No officers injured, suspect dead, police say

Sky Action News Jax flew above a Mandarin neighborhood where JSO says a suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting.

JSO says an officer shot and killed a man after he refused to drop a knife and raised it toward officers at a Mandarin home.

Sky Action News Jax was above the neighborhood off Losco Road Wednesday morning.

JSO says they were called to a home for reports of an armed suicidal person.

When officers got there, a man had a knife and raised it toward officers in the doorway, JSO said.

JSO said officers told the man to drop the knife but he refused. They used a Taser to try to disarm him.

They kept asking him to drop the knife but he refused. That's when JSO says he raised the knife again.

Officer B.L. Kelly fired his gun once, killing the suspect, according to JSO.

This is Kelly's first officer-involved shooting. The officers were wearing body cameras, according to JSO.

Officers have not yet released the man's identity pending notification of family.

This is the seventh officer-involved shooting in 2019, according to Action News Jax records.
