JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Big additions are coming to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville’s Intracoastal West.

The hospital reports more patients need treatment for complex illnesses -- so it plans to expand by adding five more floors to its tower, making room for at least 121 additional inpatient and ICU beds.

“I think it’s awesome. I’m a real estate agent here in Jacksonville. I’m always telling people what great things are happening here,” Mike Boyle said.

To Boyle, the expansion is a win for Jacksonville.

“This will significantly expand our hospital by more than 50 percent the number of beds and allow us to treat more patients who are seeking out the care that we provide,” Mayo Clinic CEO Dr. Kent Thielen said.

Thielen says the beds will be for patients with neurologic disease, those under cardiac and cancer care, and transplant patients.

Boyle has a friend with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. “I actually recommended Mayo Clinic to him,” he said.

The hospital’s expansion project will begin later this year and comes with a $432 million dollar price tag.

Right now, Thielen says about a quarter of the beds are for complex care patients. The expansion will bring that up to about two-thirds.

More patients means more staff. Currently, Thielen says more than 8,000 people work on Mayo’s campus. Thielen couldn’t share exact numbers yet, but he said the expansion will bring more jobs. “It’ll be quite significant,” he added.

As for Boyle, he’s glad Mayo Clinic is taking on the ever-growing number of patients in Florida. “It’s a great thing,” he said.

Thielen expects construction to be done by the end of 2026.
