The name of a Jacksonville high school has disappeared from its sign, but it’s not gone for good.
“Robert E. Lee” vanished from Robert E. Lee High School’s marquee in Riverside a few days after the word “racist” was spray painted over the sign.
"My whole family has went here over the years and we're all Robert E. Lee Generals," said Antinese Stinson.
Stinson wants to see the confederate general's name restored to the sign soon.
“I think it should always remain Robert E. Lee, home of the Generals,” said Stinson.
Duval County School District police reports say on Saturday, several of the letters in Lee’s name were pried off and spray painted to look like they were crossed out.
A witness told police she saw the word “racist” spray painted on the Plexiglas, but a church that meets at the school cleaned it off before officers arrived.
The school district spokesperson said all the letters have been removed temporarily for repair.
“If you forget history and erase it, you’re bound to repeat it,” said parent Les Coffey.
One Twitter user said, “They are gone now, so they should stay gone. We love our school, but it should not be named for a Confederate general.”
Alumnus and parent Sabrina Purdy said it’s what happens inside the school that’s important, not the name on the outside.
“Hey, I don’t even get into all that. It is what it is. The children still need an education,” said Purdy.
