NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Neighbors in Fernandina Beach are calling for long-term solutions when it comes to a home that’s been deemed a ‘nuisance,’ as well as future code enforcement cases.
Weeks ago, Action News Jax showed you the large piles of trash and debris spread across the yard, sparking health and safety concerns.

On Dec. 15, Nassau County leaders sent garbage trucks to the home on Pine Road to remove trash from the right-of-way to address the health issues.

Many neighbors predicted the trash removal wouldn’t solve the problem
“The Nassau County Board of Commissioners needs to adopt a Public Nuisance Abatement Board, which will bring an end to shenanigans like this,” Bright said.
When Action News Jax checked back Monday, we saw trash piled again on the right-of-way along with debris and other items scattered across the front lawn.
Bright said this deserves more than a short-term fix.
“What we need is leadership and long-term sustainable solutions,” Bright said.

He said there needs to be a threshold in place, so that when a case reaches a certain dollar or time -- it’s referred to the Public Nuisance Abatement Board. Duval county has that system in place, but Nassau County doesn’t.
Neighbors shared that people are constantly coming and going from the home, which makes them concerned about their safety.
“It’s just kind of scary too,” one neighbor said. “I can’t let my kids ride up and down the road.”
Many continue to push for a Public Nuisance Abatement Board in Nassau County.
According to the county: in 2019 the County adopted Ordinance No. 2019-15, known as the Standard Unsafe Building Abatement Code, however it deals with maintenance of buildings or structures that are vacant and deemed unsafe.
