Checks Cashed employee shot during robbery on University Blvd., police say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police are searching for a man who shot an employee at Checks Cashed during a robbery, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

It happened at the business located on University Boulevard near Atlantic Boulevard Thursday morning.

JSO said the employee was alone when the robbery and shooting happened. The employee was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK.

Officers couldn’t give us give us a good description of the suspect but one neighbor told Action News Jax that officers were looking for a man wearing a red hoodie.

Officers with rifles were seen searching for the man in neighborhoods and along Atlantic Boulevard.

LaJamie Sutton ​lives a block down the street and when she opened her door she saw police in her front yard.

“I noticed that a couple off officers walking down the street carrying AK-47s like it was no big deal,” Sutton said.

Sutton says her family members are customers at Checks Cashed.

“My grandson goes in there to cash his checks and I go in there a couple of times and it’s kind of frightening, especially when I have young kids, I had a son that just left for school,” she said.

The Sheriff’s Office tells Action News Jax two elementary schools were locked down as a precaution.

Police did not specify which schools were on lockdown.

Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance video to get a better description of the suspect. Anyone with information regarding the robbery is asked to call police at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
