The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said it was working on a traffic accident involving multiple vehicles with multiple patients.

A recently released report from the Florida Highway Patrol said that a van, a sports utility vehicle, and a sedan were all traveling on I-295 southbound north of US Highway 17. The SUV and car were stopped in the right lane as the van was approaching from the rear.

The driver of the van made an improper lane change and failed to stop, resulting in the crash. The front right of the van struck the left rear of SUV, causing it to spin forward. As a result, the front left of the SUV struck the right rear of the sedan.

The SUV also overturned, striking the guardrail. When it finally came to a stop, the van continued forward where the front struck the back of the sedan.

The sedan also spun out before finally stopping in the middle of the road.

The van came to a final stop in the right center lane and right lane.

Six people were transported to a local hospital. One of the passengers in the SUV was pronounced dead.

FHP states that the investigation is still ongoing.

Delays were extensive as traffic cameras showed backups extending to Morse Road earlier this afternoon.
