Second part of Florida's texting and driving ban goes into effect Oct. 1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Drivers, even a peek at your cell phone in a work or school zone could cost you.

The second part of Florida’s texting and driving ban goes into effect today. Troopers can pull you over just for having your phone in your hand in a school or work zone – and not using a hands-free system.

Texting and driving officially became a primary offense in July.

At least 438 warnings were handed out from July 1 through Sept. 17, according to Florida Highway Patrol records.

In almost the same amount of time, all law enforcement agencies in the state issued 542 citations.
