JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Sen. Marco Rubio toured the Eureka Gardens Apartments Friday, a day after several tenants were evacuated because stairs were removed.
Rubio dropped out of the presidential race, but he’s spent a lot of time fighting for the residents of Eureka Gardens.
Stairs were removed Thursday at the apartment complex for safety reasons and will be replaced.
Action News Jax has been investigating the problems at the apartment complex for months, including issues with mold.
"What you guys are doing is horrible," Rubio said. He walked out before the tour and told Global Ministries Foundation officials the conditions are inexcusable. GMF is the owner of Eureka Gardens.
Rubio said there is still more work to be done at the apartment complex.
Rubio said since GMF receives federal funding as Section 8 Housing, he wants to see what can be changed in federal law so it never happens again.
GMF said the property up is for sale. For some residents, that buyout can’t happen soon enough.
