ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Nearly a month after Hurricane Matthew hit Northeast Florida, some neighbors are still dealing with storm debris and heavily damaged homes.
In St. Augustine’s Davis Shores neighborhood, many homes were flooded out, and have to be gutted. That is why some neighbors are opting to live in campers in their driveways as they rebuild.
“You your wife and two kids have been living in this?” Action News Jax reporter Cole Heath asked homeowner Tyne Anderson.
“Yeah,” Anderson said.
“What’s that been like?” Heath asked Anderson.
“Tonight (Tuesday) is our first night in it. We’ve had a condo the past four weeks,” Anderson said.
St. Augustine officials say more than 500 homes in the Davis Shores neighborhood were damaged by Hurricane Matthew.
Our crews saw several campers parked in driveways in the neighborhood Tuesday.
Neighbors like Anderson say they could be living in their fifth-wheel campers for up to six months.
“It is what it is,” Anderson said.
As for the debris still lining streets like the ones in Davis Shores, St. Johns County leaders say the first cleanup sweep through the entire county should wrap up in mid-November.
