ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A new massive redevelopment project will come to St. Johns County in hopes that it will spur an economic boom at the St. Augustine Outlets.
In an unanimous decision on Tuesday, the St. Johns County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the project that will bring new homes and retail space to the area.
The owners of the outlet mall said revenue is down and the current business model isn’t working anymore.

Action News Jax obtained the documents that show the planned layout changes.
The project would close the mall while putting in family units and a hospital across the way on Outlet Mall Boulevard.
The empty grass lot would become a Baptist Medical Center.
It will also include almost 100 thousand square feet of retail and office space.
County officials seem to think the changes will help breathe new life into the outlet mall, even if that means making some sacrifices.

Not all neighbors say they’re on board.
Some said they’re frustrated because closing the mall for the redevelopment project means finding a new place to shop.
There’s no timeframe for these changes at this time. The next board of commissioners meeting is Dec. 7.
